Judiciary vs legislature row ends in Manipur

The tussle between the legislature and the judiciary in Manipur was resolved on Thursday with advocates deciding to end their nine-day stir and join courts from Friday following a meeting with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh who regretted the attacks on judges' houses and the court complex in Imphal.

Following this decision by the lawyers, assembly Speaker T N Haokip is not likely to press privilege notices on two judges of the Gauhati high court, sources in the assembly secretariat said.

The legislature-judiciary row had erupted on July 24 when the Imphal bench of Gauhati high court asked the chief minister to appear before the court in connection with non-compliance with an earlier court order.

The assembly speaker, in turn, asked Justice N S Singh of the bench to appear before the privilege committee.

At the same time, the state government had imposed curfew in the court complex and withdrawn security to judges.

At a meeting on Wednesday night with representatives of the High Court Bar Association and the All Manipur Bar Association, Ibobi Singh said he was unaware of the withdrawal of security from the Imphal court complex on July 24, official sources said.

HCBA and AMBA sources said the chief minister expressed unhappiness over the tension between the judiciary and the legislature and apologised for the incidents that took place at the court complex and the residences of the judges on July 23 and 24.
