Cabinet to recommend revocation of President's rule in UP

With the Bahujan Samaj Party and Bharatiya Janata Party deciding to form a coalition government in Uttar Pradesh, the Union Cabinet on Monday night decided to recommend to President K R Narayanan revocation of President's rule in the state.

The President's rule was imposed in UP on March 4.

The President's Rule in UP "may be revoked on the date or before the swearing-in" of BSP leader Mayawati as chief minister, said the cabinet recommendation, according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan.

He said after a meeting of the Cabinet that the decision was taken on the basis of the report of UP Governor Vishnukant Shastri on the possibility of formation of a stable government in the state.

After Mayawati met Shastri in Lucknow earlier in the day and staked claim to form government, the governor said: "I am prima facie convinced that the BSP-BJP alliance enjoys comfortable majority in the House and it can provide a stable government."
