President expresses anguish over
Gujarat riots

President K R Narayanan on Monday night expressed deep anguish and pain over the killings in Gujarat and said that the foremost task was to restore peace in the state.

Narayanan said: "I have been deeply anguished and pained at the violent incidents and killings that have disturbed the peace and communal harmony in Gujarat and elsewhere."

Pointing out that violence had "devastated" Gujarat, Narayanan voiced concern over the "distressing situation" of the victims and the continuing violence in the state.

"It is the duty of every Indian, political, social and religious leaders and the common man and woman to strive their best to restore peace so that the foundations of our state and tradition of tolerance are preserved and strengthened in this crisis of our state and society," he said

Stating that many people had sent him representations about the "distressing situation of the victims", the President appealed to all "my fellow citizens to restore communal harmony and do everything to end the communal violence and harness all our resources to provide relief and rehabilitation to all the affected people".
