HC stays confirmation of employees appointed during Sidhu's tenure

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday stayed the confirmation of all those employees who had joined service in the Punjab government on the recommendation of the Punjab Public Service Commission during the tenure of arrested chairman Ravinder Pal Singh Sidhu.

A division bench, comprising Justice G S Singhvi and Justice M M Kumar, also stayed the selection process of candidates, which is underway.

The direction was issued on a public interest petition filed by the Common Cause Forum of Chandigarh.

Sidhu was arrested while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 500,000 from a job aspirant.

The state government had announced its decision to review 3,446 appointments, including to the Punjab Civil Service (executive), PCS (judicial), posts of deputy superintendents of police, tehsildars, lecturers, medical officers and veterinary officers, made during Sidhu's five-year tenure.

Sidhu continues to be the chairman of the PPSC as it is a constitutional post and only the President can remove him.
