Chief Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal is planning to write a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, congratulating him on his bold initiative against corruption in public life.
Vittal told rediff.com on Monday that he would send copies of the letter to other chief ministers too. "The Punjab government has done commendable work," he said, "by arresting Ravinder Paul Singh Sidhu [chairman of the Punjab Public Service commission] and recovering a huge amount of cash from him."
Vittal said he has a remedy for corruption. "The properties of corrupt public servants should be forfeited," he said, "and he/she should be deprived of the ill-gotten money, which is used to hire the best of lawyers to fight their cases. This would send a strong signal to corrupt officials."
He said Punjab could lead the way by adopting a law on these lines. "I have sent a draft to the Government of India," he said. "It is pending with the ministry of law."
Vittal said that just because someone had been appointed to a constitutional post did not mean he could indulge in corruption. "It is the duty of the constitutional appointee to ensure that those he deals with get a fair deal," he said. "Sidhu should have ensured that the appointments made by the Punjab Public Service Commission were fair. Instead he indulged in corruption because he held a constitutional post."
