Balayogi's elder sister seeks TDP nomination

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

V Suryakantam, elder sister of the late Lok Sabha speaker G M C Balayogi, has sought the Telugu Desam Party's nomination to contest the Lok Sabha by-election from Amalapuram constituency in Andhra Pradesh.

Suryakantam, who is camping in Hyderabad to lobby for the nomination, said she was the right candidate for the TDP because most of the party's politicians in Amalapuram favour her.

She also claimed that all the relatives of Balayogi support her candidature, since Balayogi's widow Vijayakumari is not keen on entering politics.

The Amalapuram seat fell vacant following Balayogi's death in a helicopter crash on March 3.

The state Congress has already decided not to contest the by-election as a mark of respect to Balayogi.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had earlier indicated that the party would nominate Balayogi's widow. He is yet to react to the request from Suryakantam, who says she had brought up Balayogi.
