Ajit Singh removes last hurdle before Mayawati

The stage was set on Sunday night for Bahujan Samaj Party vice-president Mayawati to stake her claim to form a coalition government in Uttar Pradesh with the Bharatiya Janata Party after the Rashtriya Lok Dal led by Ajit Singh, which has 14 legislators, finally extended its support.

Sources close to Union Agriculture Minister Singh said the letter of support was sent to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had an hour-long meeting with BSP leaders Kanshi Ram and Mayawati at his residence on Sunday to discuss government formation.

Singh had the letter sent through an emissary, the sources said.

Earlier, Ajit Singh's party had withheld the formal letter of support, saying it would support the coalition only if assured of a positive response on its demand for 'adequate representation' in the state government and the creation of a new state called Harit Pradesh comprising the districts of western Uttar Pradesh.

The RLD's letter of support, which will help the BSP-BJP alliance with a combined strength of 186 legislators to reach the majority mark in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly, set at rest speculation about a last-minute hiccup in government formation in the state.
