Bureau sources told the Press Trust of India that Baldev Singh, chief engineer of the rural development department, and district development panchayat officer Kuldip Singh were arrested on charges of violating rules in recruiting nine engineers.
The sources said some persons who were recruited last year under the quota for handicapped persons were not handicapped. Some of these persons did not figure in the original list of selections. One of the recruits, Kamalpreet Singh, is related to former development and panchayat minister Nirmal Singh Kahlon, they said.
Vigilance officers raided Kamalpreet Singh's house near Amritsar, but could not find him, the sources said. They, however, found 47 crates of Indian-made foreign liquor there.
The action was taken following complaints that money had played a role in the recruitment.
