14 terrorists gunned down in J&K

Security forces gunned down 14 terrorists, including nine foreigners, in separate encounters in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu on Sunday, official sources said.

On specific information about the presence of a group of heavily armed foreign mercenaries, who had infiltrated from the Line of Control, troops cordoned off the Dara-Glotradar area in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district at about 0400 IST on Sunday.

In an encounter that lasted more than four hours, six mercenaries belonging to the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen were killed. Four Kalashnikov rifles, one pistol, one sniper rifle and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives were found.

Two other mercenaries were killed on Sunday afternoon when they were trying to infiltrate into the Poonch sector, the sources said. Two Kalashnikov rifles, three magazines and nine grenades were seized. Another infiltration attempt was foiled near the LoC in Noushera area of Rajouri district.

Three terrorists were gunned down in a joint operation by the army and police in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district.

Police shot dead another foreign mercenary in the Loran valley of Poonch district late on Sunday afternoon. One Kalashnikov rifle, one rocket-propelled grenade, two rockets and seven grenades were recovered from him.

Meanwhile, terrorists abducted four shepherds on Sunday from the upper forest belt of Batote tehsil in Doda district. The terrorists intercepted a group of shepherds when they were descending from the upper pastures after grazing their cattle in Chak Kuhuri area of Doda district. After questioning them, the terrorists abducted four shepherds. Security forces have launched a search for them.
