Embassy in Greece denies report of Indians' drowning

The Indian embassy in Athens on Saturday denied reports that about 25 youths from Punjab, who were travelling to Lebanon illegally in search of jobs, were among those feared drowned when a boat capsized near Greece.

A boat had sunk off the Greek shores some 12 days ago but there were no Indians among the drowned, an embassy source said.

"We have no official word about such a large number of Indians drowning off the Greek shores. If the report were true, we would have been officially contacted either by the coast guard or by the authorities, as is the custom," he said.

Nawanshahr district Deputy Commissioner A K Gupta had on Friday said that he had received information about the tragedy from the relatives of those feared dead.

According to the relatives, about seven youths aboard the boat had been saved by Greek authorities, Gupta said.
