Place of worship attacked in Ahmednagar

Violence erupted in Mukundnagar area of Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, after a group of people attacked a place of worship on Friday night.

The attack, in which three women were injured, took place when devotees had gathered there to make preparations for Hanuman Jayanti celebrations on Saturday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Natha Ghule said.

According to a complaint lodged at the Bhingar Camp police station, the mob attacked the place of worship with swords, acid bulbs and wooden staffs.

Following the attack, groups of two different communities indulged in heavy stone pelting, police said, adding senior police officials along with a platoon of the state reserve police force had rushed to the scene.

The police had arrested three persons and search was on for about 60 others involved in the attack, Ghule said, adding that the situation in the area was under control.

Meanwhile, local Shiv Sena legislator Anil Rathod has demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the attack.

Rathod, who visited the area, also demanded transfer of assistant police inspector and in-charge of Bhingar police station Devidas Kale, for failing to handle the situation.

City unit Bharatiya Janata Party chief Sunil Ramdasi, while condemning the incident, demanded a search of Mukundnagar area for recovering unauthorised arms.

The by-elections to 10 seats of the civic body are slated for Sunday.
