Delhi court awards death penalty to 3 terrorists

Three Pakistani terrorists belonging to the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen -- formerly known as the Harkat-ul-Ansar -- were on Saturday sentenced to death by a Delhi court for abducting four foreign tourists, including an American, in 1994.

Special Judge S N Dhingra, while sentencing to death Nazir Khan, Abdul Rahim and Naser Mehmood Sodozey, awarded life sentence to Nurul Amin, Mohammed Sayeed and Mahmood.

Sheikh Omar, who is facing trail in Pakistan for allegedly abducting and murdering Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was also an accused in the case.

The court had dropped charges against him following the government's deal with hijackers of the Indian Airlines plane in 1999.

They had demanded the release of Sheikh and four other terrorists in exchange for the passengers of IC 814.

The prosecution had alleged that the Pakistani terrorists had abducted American tourist Bela Joseph Nuss and three British nationals -- Christopher Miles Crosten, Rhys Curjel Partridge and Paul Banjamin Rideout -- from Connaught Place, New Delhi, on October 20, 1994 to put pressure on the Indian government to release ten hardcore terrorists from jail.

According to the charge sheet filed by the police, Sheikh, who was holding a British passport, had abducted the foreign nationals along with his accomplices after "befriending" them.

The Uttar Pradesh police had arrested Sheikh following an encounter in Mussorie police station area of Ghaziabad district when a team had gone there to raid some premises in connection with a robbery case.

American national Nuss, tied with chains, was rescued from there and the three British nationals were rescued from Saharanpur after an encounter in which a constable and a terrorist were killed.
