25 Punjabis feared drowned near Greece

Around 25 youths from Punjab -- who had illegally gone to Lebanon in search of jobs -- were feared drowned after their boat capsized on its way from Turkey to Greece.

The Deputy Commissioner of Nawanshahr district in Punjab, A K Gupta, said on Friday that he had received information about the tragedy from the parents of those feared dead.

"The district administration has written to the state government to take up the matter with the external affairs ministry," he said.

According to relatives of some of the victims, the Greek authorities could save only seven people aboard the boat, Gupta said.

More than 100 people -- mostly from Punjab -- were drowned off the coast of Malta two years back while trying to reach Europe illegally.
