ASI official held, assets worth Rs 1 crore seized

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday arrested an official of the Archaeological Survey of India following seizure of property and cash worth Rs 1 crore [Rs 10 million] from his possession, official sources said on Friday.

B L Meena was held after documents relating to assets disproportionate to his known sources of income and Rs 13.40 lakh [Rs 1.3 million] were seized during raids at his Mahesh Nagar residence in Jaipur, they said.

The assets included two farmhouses, plots, shops, jewellery, vehicles and high-tech gadgets, the sources said.

Meena was produced in a court, which remanded him to police custody for four days.

The accused -- who was running at least a dozen projects on archaeological research -- was suspected to be selling antique pieces found during excavation works, they said.
