Shift Dariyakhan camp: Gujarat minister

Gujarat Minister of Civil Supplies Bharat Barot said on Thursday that the Dariyakhan Ghummat camp at Shahibagh, Ahmedabad, should be shifted as its refugees posed a security threat to the local residents.

"There is no iota of doubt... Anti-social activities are going on inside the camp at the local municipal school premises," Barot said.

He alleged that even the mob attack in front of the police commissionerate on April 23 was the handiwork of the "anti-social elements taking shelter in the camp".

"I have raised the issue with Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the Cabinet. However, no decision has emerged yet," he said.

Barot, the Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Dariyapur Kaziapura assembly segment, said police and other official agencies were conducting "detailed investigations" into the matter.

"The final decision can come only from the high-level relief committee headed by Governor S S Bhandari," he said, adding he was "hopeful" that the camp would be shifted to a locality "from where the threat perception for my 1.25 lakh population will minimise to a large extent".

He claimed that people from both the communities were in favour of shifting of the camp to a "safer distance".

"In fact, this locality was grossly misused by minorities," he alleged.
