Sorabjee re-elected to UN sub-commission on human rights

Attorney General Soli J Sorabjee has been re-elected to the prestigious United Nations Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

Sorabjee was elected as a member of the sub-commission in April 1998.

In the elections held on Wednesday, Pakistani Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar was also elected as a member.

The sub-commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights is the main subsidiary body of the UN Commission on Human Rights.

It is composed of 26 experts who act in their personal capacity and are elected with regard to equitable geographic distribution.

Half the members and their alternates are elected every two years and each serves for a term of four years, a release said on Thursday, adding that the sub-commission holds an annual session in Geneva whose duration is for three weeks.

One of the working groups of the sub-commission is the Working Group on Minorities, of which Sorabjee has been a member since 1998, it said.
