Pakistani lawyers protest against referendum

Lawyers across Pakistan on Thursday boycotted courts to protest against the referendum called by President Pervez Musharraf.

Responding to the call given by the Central and Provincial Bar Associations, the advocates of the supreme court, Sindh high court, district and city courts boycotted work.

The bar associations also filed petitions in the supreme court questioning the legality of the referendum.

The lawyers also held demonstrations in a number of towns, including Karachi, a report in the The News said.

Meanwhile, the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, along with leaders of religious parties and human rights organisations, prepared to hold an all-party conference on Friday to chalk out plans to hold an anti-referendum rally on April 27.
