India renews support to Lankan peace process

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday renewed India's support for the peace process in Sri Lanka during a meeting with visiting President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

He also reiterated New Delhi's commitment to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka, external affairs ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao said.

Kumaratunga, who is on a weeklong visit, briefed the prime minister on the progress in the Norwegian-brokered peace process.

The parleys were held at a meeting attended by External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Principal Secretary Brajesh Mishra.

Former Sri Lankan foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar assisted Kumaratunga.

This was followed by a lunch hosted by Vajpayee for the Sri Lankan president where Singh, Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Mishra, Foreign Secretary Chokila Iyer and India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka G K Gandhi were present.
