No outbreak of measles epidemic in Gujarat: Centre

The Centre on Tuesday denied any outbreak of measles epidemic in relief camps in Gujarat.

Reacting to reports that nearly 60 children had developed measles and most of the medicines had come from non-governmental organisations and private donors, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister C P Thakur said: "As of now, only 34 cases of measles have been reported in Godhra, specially among those who could not be vaccinated because of their frequent mobility."

He said the government had taken all major steps to vaccinate the children for measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases, an official release said.

Thakur said 7,192 children had been vaccinated in refugee camps in the riot-affected areas and adequate quantity of antibiotics had been supplied following a request from the state government.
