Sidhu case: Punjab police
yet to approach Interpol

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Punjab police is yet to approach the Interpol division of the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the Ravinder Pal Singh Sidhu case.

Sidhu, the chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission, is accused of fixing appointments made through the commission.

The vigilance department of the Punjab government has so far unearthed assets worth Rs 25 crore [Rs 250 million] belonging to Sidhu's family and friends.

"The Interpol has not yet received any request. Once the request is made we will see what is the nature of assistance that they are seeking from us," CBI spokesman S M Khan told rediff.com

"If it is merely an inquiry then the same could be forwarded to Interpol branches in Belgium and the US. But if they ask for some documents relating to transactions in some banks then they would have to go back to the court and get a letter of rogatory. As and when we receive the request, the CBI-Interpol would take prompt action," Khan said.

When contacted on phone, Punjab Vigilance Director A P Pandey confirmed that the police had not yet approached the Interpol.

"Superintendent of Police Jaskaran Singh had met [the] joint director of Interpol in Delhi last week. We have been asked to prepare certain papers and we are now working on those papers. As and when they are ready they would be sent without any delay," Pandey told rediff.com

"We started working on his case last month. Sidhu was confident that since his appointment was a constitutional one, barring the President of India no one else could touch him. That made him all the more brazen in his approach and he was demanding money openly," Pandey said.

Besides Sidhu, the Punjab police has arrested two more persons -- Jagman Singh, the PPSC chairman's associate, and Surinder Manchanda, wife of G S Manchanda, who helped Sidhu in transferring Rs 1 crore [Rs10 million] to banks in Luxembourg and the US.

"We have arrest warrants against Sidhu's mother Prithpal Kaur, his brother Ratinder Singh Sidhu and his wife Ajinder Kaur," Pandey said.
