First Sino-Indian meet on counter-terrorism held

India and China on Tuesday held their first meeting on counter-terrorism.

The two sides exchanged views on the international counter-terrorism situation, including developments in the region, external affairs ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao said.

The director general (International Organisations) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Li Baodong, led the Chinese delegation while Nalin Surie, joint secretary in the foreign ministry, led the Indian side.

The two sides also discussed cooperation at the United Nations and possibilities of enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Both sides described the meeting as useful in enhancing mutual understanding and agreed on the terms of reference for the ongoing dialogue. The next round of the dialogue will be held in Beijing early next year.

An agreement to establish this dialogue mechanism was reached between Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the Chinese leaders visit to India in January this year.
