Fractured NDA pulls off victory, Laloo's nominee loses

A fractured National Democratic Alliance on Monday dealt a blow to Laloo Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by winning all four seats it contested in the elections to the state legislative council.

The RJD won four seats and its ally Congress one to fill up nine seats in the Upper House.

RJD nominee Niranjan Kumar Pappu was among the losers garnering just 20 first preference votes.

While Kameshwar Chaupal (BJP) polled the highest number of 25 first preference votes, Nagendra Prasad Singh (RJD), Jyoti (Cong) and Vinay Kumar Sinha of the Samata Party polled 24 each.

Geeta Devi, Yunus Lohia and Badshah Prasad Azad (all RJD) secured 23 votes each, followed by Giriraj Singh (BJP) and Tanveer Hasan of Janata Dal (United) secured 22 votes each.

While four votes were declared invalid, an indisposed Mahavir Prasad (RJD) did not participate in the voting.

Jailed Congress MLA Sanjay Singh also did not turn up as he failed to secure the necessary permission to participate in the election.

Barring hat trick-achiever Tanveer Hasan (JD-U) and Nagendra Prasad Singh (RJD), all those who emerged victorious are first-timers.

The five-member CPI-ML, which has been questioning the very wisdom of having an Upper House in a cash-strapped state, abstained from polling.
