Indian army chief begins US tour

Indian Army chief General S Padmanabhan began his US visit with a lunch with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Richard Myers at the Pentagon.

Addressing a press conference later on Monday, Gen Myers said he would discuss US-India military-to-military relationship with Gen Padmanabhan who would also visit US training facilities and discuss 'issues of mutual interest to India and the US'.

"He will be travelling to other bases and camps and posts in the United States to learn and observe and exchange ideas," he said.

Gen Myers pointed out that the US has an extensive programme with the Indian armed forces in terms of training and bringing Indian officers and others to the US to attend US educational institutions.

Gen Padmanabhan is actually being hosted by the chief of staff of the US army, Gen Myers informed the gathering.
