Speaker to be elected after first
week of May

The election of Lok Sabha speaker was likely after the first week of May and the Bharatiya Janta Party might field its candidate if the Telugu Desam Party does not wish to field its nominee, National Democratic Alliance sources said on Monday.

"If [the] TDP does not field anybody, then [the] BJP's claim for the post will be legitimate," the sources said.

They said the government was in no hurry, as the issue would be taken up only towards the last week of the current budget session of Parliament.

Referring to reports that Nationalist Congress Party leader and former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma was in the race for the Chair, they said there was no such likelihood.

"If somebody from the opposition can become the speaker, then what is the harm in continuing with Sayeed, who is from [the] Congress," they asked, adding that Sangma's candidature could have been considered if the NCP was a supporter of the NDA.

The post of Lok Sabha speaker fell vacant after the death of TDP-nominee G M C Balayogi in a helicopter crash last month.
