Punjabi University vice-chancellor sacked

The controversial vice-chancellor of the Patiala-based Punjabi University Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia was sacked in the face of charges of misbehaving with a girl student and a case of attempt to murder, an official said on Monday.

Ahluwalia has been removed by Punjab Governor J F R Jacob, who is also chancellor of the university, on the recommendation of the state government, S K Sinha, principal secretary to the chief minister, said.

Apart from the charge of misbehaving with a girl student of the fine arts department, Ahluwalia was also later charged in a case of attempt to murder following an alleged attack on a lecturer in the campus.

Ahluwalia was appointed to the post by the Prakash Singh Badal-led Akali Dal-BJP government.
