Pachauri defends election as IPCC chief

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, who was recently elected chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, on Monday denied Western media reports that he had won the election because he was "pro-Bush administration".

"I am appreciative of the US for support, but I am not beholden to any particular country for my support, which comes from a group that not only supported my candidature, but even fought for it," Dr Pachauri said in New Delhi

"I presume I am well-known in the US and I presume they felt that I was working... my support base is Asia, Russia, Central Asia and some Latin American countries," said Dr Pachauri, who defeated Robert T Watson, the incumbent, by a margin of 27 votes.

Dr Pachauri, who heads the Tata Energy Research Institute, said there was a strong sentiment that a candidate from a developing nation would lead to more focus on developing countries.
