Seven charred to death in NOIDA

Seven people, including five children, were on Monday killed in a fire that raged through a cluster of slums in NOIDA township of Uttar Pradesh.

"Five children, one woman and an elderly man, were killed in the devastating fire that broke out at the clusters in Sector 44 of NOIDA this afternoon," District Magistrate Deepak Kumar said.

He said two of the eight people, who sustained burn injuries, were in critical condition and had been shifted to Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi.

Most of those staying in the slums were illegal migrants from Bangladesh, who worked in the industrial units of NOIDA.

Kumar said the cause of the fire, which swept through nearly 500 shanties for two hours before being brought under control, was being ascertained.

Meanwhile, the district administration was providing cash assistance of Rs 1500, food and other facilities to the 675 families, which were affected by the blaze, the district magistrate said.

Besides, Rs 25,000 each was being paid to the family members of the five children and Rs 50,000 to the next of kin of the woman and the man killed.
