Indus Water Treaty not under threat: Pakistan

Pakistan on Monday denied that the Indus Basin Water Treaty was in any danger of being scrapped due to political and military tensions with India.

"This treaty has worked perfectly well over the last 40 years and we hope it would continue," foreign office spokesman Aziz Ahmed Khan said.

A report in Dawn newspaper had said that the treaty would be "automatically suspended" if India failed to invite Pakistan for the mandatory May meeting of the accord.

"If India fails to invite Pakistan, as the case seems so far, the Indus Basin Water Treaty will effectively be suspended," the newspaper quoted officials as saying.

Khan said that the treaty had certain specific provisions about consultations and resolution of problems and disputes.

He said: "It is nothing very serious. One can give it a little time but otherwise we will not wait for the thing to go to a stage where it becomes difficult to retrieve them."
