BJP opposes discussion under Rule 184

The Bharatiya Janata Party said on Monday that it was prepared to face a vote in the Lok Sabha, but was opposed to a discussion on the Gujarat issue under Rule 184, as this would set a "bad precedent".

"We have no problem in getting majority even if it [Gujarat issue] is discussed under Rule 184. But, the only thing is that this will set a bad precedent," party spokesman V K Malhotra said in New Delhi.

He said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, too, had said that the opposition could bring a no-confidence motion against the government.

Malhotra said if the opposition wanted a vote, it could do so when the Finance Bill was moved or when demands for grants of various ministries were taken up in the Lok Sabha.

The BJP spokesman blamed the opposition for stalling proceedings in Parliament on the Gujarat issue and alleged that Sunday's violence in the state was pre-planned.
