Air crash exercise sends security into tizzy

It was not an air crash, but a "dummy exercise" on Monday afternoon at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, when the wireless of all concerned security personnel buzzed with a message that an aircraft with 64 passengers on board had crashed.

The Airports Authority of India and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security had jointly carried out the exercise to check the preparedness of various agencies in case of a crash, airport sources said.

Police and paramilitary forces took positions while fire tenders and medical and rescue teams, stationed at the airport and nearby areas, zoomed in at the "crash site" only to find that everything was normal.

AAI officials said that the response of the agencies was found to be "satisfactory", and added that detailed inspection of the preparedness was being carried out to further improve on the capabilities during an emergency.
