Goa assembly election on May 30

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

Assembly election in Goa will be held on May 30, Deputy Election Commissioner A N Jha said on Wednesday.

The decision was taken after a meeting of the Election Commission in New Delhi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party government had dissolved the 40-member House on February 27 this year.

As per the notification issued by the EC, the code of conduct comes into force with immediate effect.

The nominations will be invited between May 6 and May 13. Contestants will be allowed to withdraw by May 16.

The candidates will have 13 days for electioneering, which will come to an end on May 28.

The counting of votes will begin on June 1.

Around 9,18,500 voters will exercise their franchise in the elections.

The election commission is trying to make use of photo identity cards during the polls.

The state is going for electronic voting for the third time, after successfully using the Electronic Voting Machines in June 1999.
