Benefits of being Laloo Prasad's relative

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Hichhin Bigha -- a sleepy hamlet located on the border of Arwal and Aurangabad districts of Bihar - is awaiting its place under the sun.

The village is going to be the sasural of Rohini, the second daughter of Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Laloo Prasad Yadav.

Till now there was no electricity in Hichhin Bigha and the road leading to the village was in an appalling condition.

However, things are changing quickly. Electricity will be available soon and the road is being made at a breakneck speed.

"The deadline fixed for completion of the road is April 28. The marriage date is expected to be fixed after Lalooji comes from Delhi," a senior official supervising the work said.

According to sources, an RJD MLC was made to cough up Rs 3.8 million from his development fund for constructing roads in the village.

Rohini, a medical student from Jamshedpur medical college in Jharkhand, is to marry IT professional Sauresh Singh, son of Rao Ranvijay Singh, an income-tax commissioner in Mumbai who hails from Hichhin Bigha.

Educated at the Patna University, Sauresh is currently working for the Tata Consultancy Service and is settled in the United States.

It is an illustrious family that Rohini is marring into.

"The grandfather of Sauresh was a Gandhian freedom fighter who launched a reformist movement," claimed one person.

But Hichhin Bigha's pride is turning out to be the "neighbours' envy".

People from the neighbouring villages repeatedly steal the wires that have been laid out.

"In the morning we find that the wires have been stolen at several places," one official said.

Rao Balbir Singh, a retired teacher and uncle of Sauresh, said things have changed now that the would-be bride is going to be the chief minister's daughter.
