UN declines role in resolving Indo-Pak disputes

The United Nations does not envisage any role in resolution of differences between India and Pakistan unless both countries ask for it, a UN spokesman has said.

"Any role for the United Nations would have to be welcomed by both India and Pakistan. Should both countries ask for the Secretary-General's (Kofi Annan) good offices, I am sure he would be happy to provide them," Fred Eckhard said on Tuesday.

A Pakistan reporter had asked at the daily briefing if the UN saw any potential role in the 'de-escalation' of tensions between the two countries as there was a feeling that South Asia is not getting world body's 'due attention'.
