Resolve Gujarat violence peacefully: US

Saying communal violence like that in Gujarat does not benefit anybody, the United States has urged Hindus and Muslims of India to seek a peaceful solution to their differences.

"I think you are aware that India has long made itself proud at being a multi-ethnic secular nation, accepting all religions. It is very important that parties seek peaceful resolution to their differences, because this type of violence doesn't benefit anybody and it simply results in the loss of innocent life," deputy spokesman of US state department Philip Reeker said on Monday night.

He said that Assistant Secretary of State Christina Rocca, during her recent visit to New Delhi, had made this point clear to the Indian leadership.

"Our position on communal violence that has occurred recently in Gujarat province is clear. I can point out that one of the things Assistant Secretary Rocca talked about last week in New Delhi was condemnation for the horrible violence in Gujarat and urged all parties to seek a peaceful solution to their differences," Reeker said.
