Historic re-run of India's first
train attracts crowds in Mumbai

A historic re-run of India's first train from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Thane to mark the 150th anniversary of Indian Railways attracted large crowds in Mumbai on Tuesday.

A commemorative stamp was also released by Union Communications Minister Pramod Mahajan on the occasion in the presence of Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander and Railway Minister Nitish Kumar.

The Rs-15 stamp carries an image of the train pulled by a steam engine on its maiden journey (1853) from CST (then Bori Bunder) to Thane (Then Tanna).

Speaking on the occasion, the governor lauded the role of the railways in improving transport and communication facilities in the country.

Nitish Kumar said the re-run with seven vintage coaches and few modern air-conditioned coaches was symbolic of the railways trying to bridge the gap between the old and the new.
