Six victims of Republic Day blast in
Orissa lose sight

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

At least six of the 19 people injured in a balloon-cylinder blast in Bhubaneswar on January 26, 2002, have lost their vision, their parents said on Tuesday.

"We do not have money to spend on their treatment now. The boys need more efforts and money to get back their vision. We have requested Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to intervene and provide adequate assistance," they told rediff.com

Those who have written to the chief minister are Fakir Mohan Bhujbal, B Rama Rao, Prafulla Kumar Sahu, Bagha Mallik and Surendra Nath Barik.

Among those injured in the blast at the parade ground were the balloon seller, his son and other minors.

They were first treated in Orissa and later taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

Those who turned blind include S K Kalu (12), Rabi Mallik (13), Balaram Sahu (14) and Jitendra Barik (10).

They are still undergoing treatment at AIIMS, the parents said.
