Nalanda Police arrested a former regional passport officer of Patna, M N Prasad, in connection with issuance of a passport to Aftab Ansari alias Farhan Malik, alleged mastermind of the attack on the United States Information Service office in Kolkata.
Nalanda Superintendent of Police Amit Lodha said that Prasad was arrested on Sunday during a raid at his residence at Raxaul in east Champaran district.
He said that the former passport officer was arrested on the basis of information provided by Ansari during interrogation in Kolkata by a police team led by Lodha last week.
"During interrogation Ansari admitted that he got his passport on the basis of forged documents and some people, including passport office staff helped him in this," Lodha told rediff.com.
Malik is currently in the custody of Kolkata police.
Prasad was posted as passport officer at Patna regional office in 1999, when Farhan Malik was provided a passport on forged documents.
Investigations by the Bihar police have revealed that Malik alias Ansari was issued a passport from the regional passport office, Patna, in November 1999 on the basis of forged documents.
