Curfew re-imposed in Ahmedabad locality following violence

Indefinite curfew has been imposed in Dariapur locality in Ahmedabad after arson and stone-pelting led to the death of two persons and left nine, including a police constable, injured.

With this, the death toll in the Gujarat violence that began on February 27 with the Sabarmati train carnage has reached 778.

The trouble began after some people gathered on the roads and threw stones and hurled burning rags, police said.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot and controlled the violence, police added.

Police opened fire and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the mobs, which set fire to some houses in the area, they said.

Among the injured, one person was hit by a teargas shell while another received a bullet injury, police said adding they were rushed to hospitals.

Adjoining Kalupur locality was also hit by violence, police said.

Stone pelting was also reported from Idgah Chowki area, they added.

Dariapur is the second police station area to come under indefinite curfew after Danilimda, which has been under curfew since Friday last following incidents of violence in which two persons, including a woman, were killed.
