Maoist attack in Nepal in retaliation
to arrests in India

The attack by Maoists in Dang district of Nepal on Friday, in which more than 100 people were killed, was in retaliation to the arrest of eight rebels from some private nursing homes in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

"It is an act of reprisal," said an Indian police officer in the border district of Bahraich.

The UP police had arrested the eight Maoists on Wednesday night. They were promptly packed off to Nepalganj, the border town in Banke district of Nepal, where the police took custody of them.

The Maoists were stated to have suffered serious injuries in various police encounters in the Himalayan kingdom.

"On getting a tip off from the Intelligence Bureau, we put our sleuths on the job and soon we were able to confirm that these Maoist guerrillas were admitted in some private nursing homes here," Lucknow police chief B B Bakshi told rediff.com
