Maoists massacre 50 policemen in Nepal

Maoist rebels killed 50 policemen in southwestern Nepal on Thursday night, officials said.

Twelve rebels were also killed in the clashes, the officials said.

"Nearly 3,000 Maoist rebels suddenly attacked two police posts at Satbaria and Lamahi areas in Dang district late last night, which continued until the early hours of this morning," a home ministry official was quoted as saying.

"There were 80 to 90 policemen stationed at the Lamahi police post where heavy Maoist casualties were reported and the bodies of at least 12 rebels were recovered," he said.

"In this clash, more than 50 policemen are feared killed, but we are awaiting detailed reports," he added.

Over a thousand rebels attacked the Satbaria police post and looted nearly 100 self-loading rifles, another officials was quoted as saying.
