Suicide bomber kills 10 in Israel

Harsh Dobhal in Jerusalem

At least 10 people were killed and 20 injured on Wednesday in a suicide bomb explosion that ripped through a bus in the Israeli town of Haifa, a day after Tel Aviv lost 13 soldiers in ambushes in Jenin, West Bank.

The blast took place at a busy crossroad during the rush hour, media reports quoted police as saying.

The bus was on its way from Haifa to Jerusalem and was carrying about 50-55 people.

Israel Radio quoted witnesses as saying that "they felt a huge blast and then there were bodies strewn all over.... The bus is shattered, from one end to the other".

"Apparently, the Palestinian terrorists' appetite for terror has yet to be quenched," an Israeli spokesman said.

The Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Following Tuesday's attacks in Jenin, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Tuesday vowed to continue the military campaign against Palestinians.

"This is a battle for survival of the Jewish people, for survival of the state of Israel," Sharon said in a nationally televised address.

"It was a tough campaign, a campaign that we are continuing ... until we fulfil the decision of the cabinet that calls for the destruction of the infrastructure of the terror groups," Sharon said.
