CNG crisis: 1,842 more buses on Thursday, NR to run four trains

The transport situation in the capital is expected to improve from Thursday with 1,842 additional buses on the roads and four more trains going round Delhi.

Owners of 882 diesel buses on Wednesday paid the fine of Rs 500 per day levied by the Supreme Court and will operate their vehicles from Thursday, Delhi Transport Minister Ajay Maken said.

Till Tuesday, 400 such operators had deposited their fines and plied their vehicles on Wednesday, he said.

Another 960 CNG buses, whose routes were allocated in a draw on Tuesday, will ply on Thursday, Maken said.

The additional buses will join the fleet of 6,700 CNG buses and mini-buses, after around 5,500 diesel buses were withdrawn by private operators following a Supreme Court order on April 5 imposing a fine of Rs 500 per day on plying of such buses.

The Northern Railway introduced four additional services on the Ring Railway to help the beleaguered road transport network.

These trains will particularly cater to the peak-hour rush.

Maken said the transport situation was improving with every passing day and no major problem was felt on Wednesday when schools reopened after a two-day closure.
