Supreme Court issues notice to Vajpayee

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on a petition challenging his election from the Lucknow constituency of Lok Sabha.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice S P Bharucha, Justice Shivraj V Patil and Justice D M Dharmadhikari issued notice to the prime minister on an appeal filed by Harikrishan Lal, whose nomination for the Lok Sabha poll was rejected.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court had rejected Lal's petition on January 17 on the ground that the petitioner had no locus standi on the issue, as he did not fight the elections and his petition was outside the purview of the Representation of People Act.

The court directed Vajpayee to file his reply within six weeks.

The petitioner had sought setting aside the election of the prime minister to the Lok Sabha claiming that his nomination papers were wrongly rejected.
