Kuwaiti embassy officials on Monday said their country would have no objection if its national Dhalal Falag al Azmi sought Indian citizenship.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Information Director Khaled Humoud Al-Razni pointed out that Azmi, who eloped with her driver, Khader Basha and entered India on forged documents, was free to marry whoever she wished to.
Azmi's Kuwaiti citizenship, however, stands revoked.
Kuwaiti embassy officials who recently travelled to Chennai to meet the girl, said they wanted to make sure that she knew what she was doing and was aware of her country's regulations.
Underlining that Azmi had lied and violated Indian regulations by entering the country on forged documents, Al-Razni said the authorities in Tamil Nadu were less than cooperative with him and other members of his team.
He said there is no straining of relations between Kuwait and India because of this incident which has been blown out of proportion by the media.
