Delhiites stranded as diesel buses stay
off the roads

The people of Delhi faced hardships, as nearly 7,000 diesel buses went off the roads on Monday.

The Supreme Court had on Friday rejected the Centre's plea for extension of the January 31 deadline on plying of diesel-run buses.

Following the judgment, the transporters held a series of meetings among themselves and with Delhi Transport Minister Ajay Maken and decided to keep their vehicles off the roads from Saturday.

Even though the Delhi government had decided to close schools for two days to make available about 1,000 buses, used by these educational institutes, for other commuters, people were seen waiting in bus-stops in large numbers.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said she was closely monitoring the situation.
