CNG issue: Naik, Jaitley to meet Advani on Tuesday

With the Supreme Court refusing to extend the deadline for conversion of diesel buses into compressed natural gas, Union Petroleum Minister Ram Naik and Law Minister Arun Jaitley will meet Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Tuesday to discuss the options available to the government.

Minister of State for Road Transport B C Khanduri, Union Environment Minister T R Baalu and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will also meet Advani to discuss last week's Supreme Court order, Naik said.

"I have had some discussions with Jaitley, Khanduri and Baalu this morning (Monday). I also spoke to Sheilaji on telephone besides meeting transporters and Delhi MPs Madanlal Khurana and Sahib Singh Verma. We will meet home minister tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss the pressing issue," Naik said.

Asked if Centre was considering issuing an ordinance to allow use of multiple fuels, meeting emission standards, in the national capital, he said, "We have to do something that is legally possible and that is able to reduce hardship of Delhi commuters."

"The Budget session of Parliament is still on... Parliament is only in a recess and will reconvene on April 15. The Cabinet will have to take a decision on the ordinance... Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is on a two-nation tour... we have to take all this into account," Naik said.
