UPDS announces 2-month unilateral ceasefire

The United Peoples Democratic Solidarity has announced a two-month unilateral ceasefire from April 15 to facilitate negotiation with the Centre, official sources said in Guwahati, Assam, on Monday.

UPDS chairman P Dilli announced the ceasefire in a Diphu-based daily.

The objective of the truce was to "create an atmosphere conducive for talks with the Centre", Dilli was quoted as saying.

He hoped that the Centre would respond positively to the offer within 15 days.

Official sources said that the government had been apprised of the developments and measures were being discussed to deal with the UPDS.

The UPDS is active in the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills and is demanding the right for self-determination for the people of the hills.
