SC declines to further extend CNG deadline in Delhi

In significant order, the Supreme Court on Friday declined to grant any further extension of the deadline for conversion of diesel buses into CNG mode and imposed a heavy fine on bus operators who failed to stick to its January 31 deadline.

A three-judge bench comprising Justice B N Kirpal, Justice V N Khare and Justice Ashok Bhan imposed a fine of Rs 500 per day, starting from February one till Friday, on each diesel bus and Rs 1,000 per day after the pronouncement of today's judgment.

The fine thus collected by the Delhi government would be deposited in the Supreme Court registry, it said.

The court also directed that priority be given for supply of CNG to the transport sector all over the country.

It directed the Delhi government to phase out 800 diesel buses every month.

It also suggested that the state government investigate if LPG or any other clean fuel could be used for operating buses in the capital as suggested by the Bhure Lal committee.
