Sikander Bakht is new Kerala governor

Sikander Bakht, the prominent Muslim face of the BJP for years and a former Union minister, was on Tuesday appointed governor of Kerala.

Eighty-four-year old Bakht, whose term as a member of the Rajya Sabha ended in March, will succeed retired Justice S S Kang who has been on extension since January this year.

Actively involved in the politics of the nation's capital for years, Bakht was a minister in the Janata government at the Centre in 1977 and in the Vajpayee government formed in 1998.

However, he was not included in the NDA government that came to power in 1999.

This was seen as a sign of an end to his active political career in the wake of some younger Muslim faces coming up in the party.

A seasoned politician and former BJP vice-president, Bakht had served as leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha for several years when his party was not in power.
