SPG feels the heat of CNG enforcement by Delhi government

The Delhi government's drive to convert all passenger vehicles into clean fuel CNG mode has put the Special Protection Group (SPG), responsible for VVIP security, in trouble and they have approached the Supreme Court for a reprieve.

With 51 of their vehicles coming under the purview of the Delhi Transport Department order, the SPG has moved the court saying "It performs sovereign functions and, in the course of their duty, have to move outside Delhi at short notice and for long distances (to places) where CNG would not be available."

Seeking exemption from the CNG-only norm for their vehicles, the SPG said its personnel reside in the SPG complex at Dwarka but their place of duty is at the prime minister's house, PM's office and the residences of other people they are assigned to and wherever these persons go.

Apprehending difficulties in case the CNG-only norm was enforced on them, the SPG detailed its duties and work in its application before the court, which may come up for hearing on Friday.

The court, during its last hearing, had said it would not change the CNG-only norm for the capital's 10000-strong bus fleet but clarified that it had never insisted on CNG for taxis and autos as long as they run on clean fuel.
